The coat of arms
The coat of arms of the Secretariat General of Defence and National Armaments Directorate consists of a Samnite shield with a golden Roman crown of walls above it, including five crenellated towers, which symbolize great courage.
The joint nature of the Entity is represented through the institutional coats of arms of the Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Air Force and Carabinieri Corps. In the top right corner, a golden star on the Italian flag colours symbolizes the entity’s dependence on the Ministry of Defence.
The colours also have great significance: gold – the noblest of metals – represents the high role of the Armed Forces in the defence of territorial integrity, freedom and national institutions, as well as of universal principles outside the national territory; red – the colour anciently consecrated to Mars – symbolizes martial virtues; finally, dark blue and light blue represent military valour and patriotism.
