
Position Outline
The Secretary General of Defence:
- Is an Army, Navy or Air Force Officer with the rank of Lieutenant General or equivalent in permanent service, or a first-level manager within or without the Public Administration, in accordance with Article 5, Paragraph 1 of Law No. 25 of 1997;
- Is appointed by decree of the President of the Republic, subject to deliberation of the Council of Ministers, upon proposal of the Minister of Defence, after consultation with the Chief of Defence Staff, in accordance with Article 19, Paragraph 3 of Legislative Decree No. 29 of 3 February 1993 and its subsequent amendments;
- Directly reports to the Minister of Defence for administrative functions and to the Chief of Defence Staff for technical-operational functions, accounting for the implementation of directives and provisions received within their respective scopes, in accordance with Article 5, Paragraph 1 of Law No. 25 of 1997;
- Is the Deputy Chairman of the Defence-Industry Committee.
In case of absence, impediment or vacancy of the position, the Secretary General of Defence is replaced by the Deputy Secretary General, who also serves as Deputy National Armaments Director.
