The Multinational Land Force (MLF) is a combined – arms international force, based on the Julia Alpine Brigade. It was born from an Italian-Slovenian-Hungarian political-military initiative. It originated from a political-military initiative between Italy, Slovenia, and Hungary.
The MLF comprises personnel and units from the Italian, Slovenian, and Hungarian armies (Troop Contributing Nations); depending on activities and operations, it can be reinforced with contributions from the Albanian, Austrian, Croatian, and Montenegrin Armed Forces (Observer Nations).
The command is permanently activated and located in Udine at “Di Prampero” barracks. Its staff consists of Italian, Slovenian, and Hungarian Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers, along with an Observer Officer of the Austrian Armed Forces. The MLF can be employed both as a stand-alone force (e.g. initial entry force) or together with other military formations, from other countries or organization. It is capable of carrying out a wide spectrum of operations, including combat, security, and peace support operations. Since its establishment in 1998, the MLF has conducted 15 international exercises aimed to integrate the personnel and enhance the interoperability among units of member and observer countries.
These exercises serve also as a foundation for subsequent deployments in operations. The MLF took part in 8 missions abroad.
Additionally, the MLF maintains a strong collaboration with the universities of Trieste, Ljubljana, and Budapest in the realms of training, exercises, and academic activities.
