With the completion of the first edition of the Collateral Damage Estimation (CDE) Course, the Joint Air Operation School adds another fundamental piece to complete the entire training cycle for the highly specialized role of the Joint Targeteer, based on NATO and national doctrine.
The recently concluded course was organized by the Joint Air Operation School at the 4th Brigata Telecomunicazioni e Sistemi per la Difesa Aerea e l’Assistenza al Volo in Borgo Piave (LT) – in collaboration with the Joint Effects & Targeting Division of Italian Joint Operational Command, responsible for the policy of Joint Targeting within the Ministry of Defense – and was delivered entirely in English, by a Mobile Education Training Team, coming from the NATO Intelligence Fusion Centre in Molesworth (UK) and certified by the US Joint Targeting School (USJTS). This first edition was attended by 27 Officers and NCOs from national Armed Forces, including Carabinieri Corps.
The CDE course aims to train personnel who will operate in the targeting cells of an Operational Commands, supporting the Commander’s decisions in estimating possible collateral damages resulting from kinetic activities against planned targets.
Starting next year, a certification process by the USJTS will enable the Ita-JAOS to independently deliver the course.
As expressed by Brigadier General Francesco Donato RIZZO, Ita-JAOS’ Commandant, during the graduation ceremony, "Given the particular skills required of Joint Targeteers, their training is ensured by specific international training institutions, foremost among them, the NATO School in Oberammergau, Germany, where national Armed Forces send their operators to complete the training cycle. From today, the Italian Joint Air Operation School, the only Defense Training Institution accredited by NATO and unique national entity capable of delivering the entire training cycle of the Targeteer, including the Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) and the CDE courses, with evident training and economic benefits for the Italian Armed Forces."
