The Memorial
The Armed Forces Flags Memorial has been housed in the monumental complex of the Vittoriano since 1935. It holds the war flags of disbanded army, air force and carabinieri units, as well as the combat flags and banners of disarmed navy units.
Inside the memorial is the Sacello del Milite Ignoto (Tomb of the Unknown Soldier), where the Unknown Soldier was buried on 4 November 1921.
The memorial is open to the public and is managed by the Armed Forces.
The director is Colonel Marco Ronchi.
Access and opening times
Entrance to the Memorial is free.
It is open Tuesday to Friday, 9:30am–12pm and 2pm–4pm, with admission allowed up to 20 minutes before closing.
On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, it is open from 9:30 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 6 pm. The public is admitted until 20 minutes before closing time.
The Memorial is closed every Monday for maintenance and cleaning.
Requests for visit
For group visits, we recommend booking by email for organisational reasons.
Please note that bookings do not constitute a binding commitment on the part of the Defence Administration to carry out the visit if it is not possible on the dates and times indicated due to technical or institutional requirements.
The Chapel of the Altar of the Fatherland is located inside the Sacello del Milite Ignoto (Chapel of the Unknown Soldier) at the Sacrario at the Armed Forces Flags Memorial.
Holy Masses in 'Memory of all the Fallen' are celebrated in turn by the Episcopal Vicars of the Army, Navy, Air Force, the Carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza on the second Sunday of each month at 10:30 a.m. (organised by the Military Chaplains Corps).
