Lieutenant General Giovanni Maria IANNUCCI

 

Lt. Gen. Giovanni Maria Iannucci attended the Military Academy of Modena (166th Course “Dignità”) and the School of Application of Turin.

Appointed Lieutenant, in 1988, he was assigned to the 185th Paratrooper Artillery Group and, during that period, he took part in the “UNOSOM-IBIS” Operation in Somalia.

From 1994 to 1996, he commanded the Officer Cadet Company of the 176th Course, at the Military Academy of Modena.

In 1997, after attending the General Staff Course at the Army War School, he was assigned to the “Folgore” Paratrooper Brigade, as Head of Operations Section.

In 1999, he attended the Argentine Army General Staff Higher Course and, upon his return, the Joint General Staff Higher Institute (ISSMI), at the end of which he served at the General Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army.

In 2003 - 2004 he commanded the Target Acquisition Group of the 185th Reconnaissance and Target Acquisition Regiment (RRAO) and, in this capacity, he was employed in Iraq as Commander of the Task Force "Victor", as part of Operation "Ancient Babylon".

From 2004 to 2008 he was Chief of Staff Section at the General Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army.

Promoted to Colonel, from 2008 to 2010 he served in Germany as Chief Joint Fires of the UK Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC-UK).

In 2010, upon his return to Italy, he assumed command of the 185th RRAO.

From 2012 to 2014, he became Chief of the J3 Division (Operations) of the Joint Operations Command (COVI).

Promoted to Brigadier General, in 2014, he served in Kabul (Afghanistan), as Deputy DCOS Operations of the ISAF Command.

In 2015, upon his return to Italy, he assumed command of the “Folgore” Paratroopers Brigade.

In 2016, he was employed as Head of the Operations Department of the Joint Operations Command.

Promoted to Division General in 2018, from 2019 to 2022 he held the position of Chief of the III Department, Military Policy and Planning of the Defence General Staff, also covering the role of Policy and Capability Director of Defence in this capacity.

From 10 May 2022 to 24 May 2023 he was the Commander of the NATO Mission IRAQ (NMI) and, during this period, he was promoted to Lieutenant General.

Upon his return to Italy, he became Commander of the Southern Operational Forces (Naples) for a short period and subsequently, from 5 October 2023, Chief of Staff of the Minister of Defence.

On 9 January, at the proposal of the Minister of Defence, the Council of Ministers approved his appointment as Joint Operational Commander, effective from 20 January.

As military paratrooper, he obtained the qualification for free-fall launches, the military parachuting patent of numerous foreign countries, as well as the qualification of military parachuting instructor.

General IANNUCCI speaks English and Spanish, has a degree in Economics and Business and in Strategic Sciences and has a Master's degree in International Strategic-Military Studies.

For his service, he was appointed Knight of the Military Order of Italy, Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and received the Army Gold Cross of Merit, the Gold Medal for Long Command and the Medal for Long Parachuting Activity. He was also awarded honors by the Republic of Argentina, the United States of America, Hungary, France and Spain.

General IANNUCCI is married and has two children.
