Vajont Dam Disaster Anniversary
This is defense too
On October 9, 1963, nearly two thousand people lost their lives. Entire families and entire villages were wiped out.
Among the first responders were the Alpine troops of the “Cadore” Brigade, followed by other Army units and personnel from the other branches of the Armed Forces, who came to aid the population and search for the missing.
Nearly 3,500 Army personnel were deployed, with an average of over 2,000 men on the ground each day, for 38 days of operations.
These soldiers, along with other rescuers, worked tirelessly amid the mud and rubble. They even dug with their bare hands to recover the victims, provide aid, and return loved ones to their families.
Behind those numbers lie people, hard work, and solidarity. There is the tangible presence of the State standing alongside a population struck by an immense tragedy.
To remember means to preserve the memory of those lives and pay tribute to them through our daily commitment.
Yesterday as today, serving the country even in the most difficult moments.
This, too, is Defense
