UNIFIL: General Diodato Abagnara takes command of the mission

"Today, Major General Diodato Abagnara of the Italian Army took command of UNIFIL, one of the most important missions of the United Nations. His appointment to this prestigious position confirms the international community's recognition of the high professionalism of Italian Armed Forces and the credibility of Defence and Italy as reliable actors committed to promoting global peace and stability. This is an important achievement, the result of our country's constant commitment to the UN, supported by a coherent vision and long-term diplomatic and military action. It confirms Italy's role as a responsible player in the most delicate international contexts. In a complex scenario such as the Middle East, General Abagnara taking over command of UNIFIL further strengthens Italy's contribution to collective security and peace. On behalf of the Ministry of Defence and myself, I wish him every success in his new role". Thus Defence Minister Guido Crosetto. 

The command handover ceremony of the UN mission took place this morning in Naqoura, Lebanon, at the headquarters of the UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) mission. 

Major General Diodato Abagnara has taken up the post of UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander replacing Spanish Lieutenant General Aroldo Lázaro Sáenz.
