“The regatta weaves together the values of sports with the message of United Nations Resolution 1325, which officially recognized the different impact of wars and conflicts on women and their irreplaceable contribution to conflict prevention, resolution, and post-conflict reconstruction.”

So said Undersecretary of State for Defense, Senator Isabella Rauti, on the occasion of the first “Women, Peace, and Security” regatta.

In her remarks, the Undersecretary—who is responsible for gender equality and equal opportunity policies—noted that “the Italian Ministry of Defense has adopted the Women, Peace, and Security agenda in a methodical and systematic manner. The agenda,” she added, “which has Resolution 1325 as its cornerstone —the 26th anniversary of whose adoption falls on October 31—is not merely an idealistic to-do list, but a manifesto of equity that, with pragmatism, incorporates the gender perspective into military operations and assesses the impact of conflicts on women—who are often among the hardest-hit victims—as well as the role they can play in peacebuilding processes and forms of resilience. “Women are resilient and are the first to rebuild daily normality—the minute-by-minute reality of survival.”

A crew from the Italian Navy and a joint-service crew from the Military Sports Groups participated in the race. Also in attendance were representatives from the Military Sports Groups of the Italian Army, the Carabinieri, and the Defense Paralympic Sports Group (GSPD).

“Our Sports Groups are ambassadors for the values of the Defense Department and, through sports,” stated the Undersecretary—who is also responsible for sports activities and disability policies—“they promote inclusion, respect, and equal opportunity. Their presence demonstrates the Armed Forces’ commitment to making sports a tool for social cohesion, capable of overcoming barriers and highlighting everyone’s abilities.”
