The Undersecretary of State for Defence, Matteo Perego di Cremnago, participated today in the South-Eastern Europe Defence Ministerial Meeting (SEDM), a multilateral forum dedicated to strengthening political-military dialogue and cooperation between the countries of South-Eastern Europe.
In his speech, the Undersecretary emphasised the strategic importance of the region, highlighting the link between stability in the Balkans and security in the Mediterranean, especially in light of the changed operational scenarios: "The stability of South-Eastern Europe cannot be separated from that of the Mediterranean. These are two interconnected areas that are crucial for the security of the entire continent."
"Today," Perego continued, "we must take action to combat hybrid warfare and address threats ranging from cyber attacks to disinformation. These do not replace those of the past, but add to them.
In light of this context, Italy will continue to promote dialogue, collaboration and the sharing of capabilities through a pragmatic approach to common defence and security challenges. Because it is only through unity and collective responsibility that it will be possible to build a peaceful future," he concluded.
On the sidelines, Undersecretary Perego had a cordial meeting with Georgian Defence Minister Paata Patiashvili, focusing on the current geopolitical situation in the Middle East and active participation in NATO/UN programmes.
