Undersecretary Perego at the inauguration ceremony for the Military Judicial Year

“The inauguration of the Military Judicial Year represents a fundamental opportunity for discussion on the role and prospects of the Military Judiciary in a historical phase marked by profound geopolitical and technological transformations,” said Undersecretary of State for Defense Matteo Perego di Cremnago in his speech at the opening ceremony.

“We live in a scenario characterized by international tensions, hybrid threats, and new forms of conflict, which are also the result of rapid technological transformations in recent years. In this context,” Perego emphasized, “the contribution of the military judiciary is essential to ensure the proper balance between operational needs and the protection of legal guarantees.”

The Undersecretary recalled how the strengthening measures already implemented, including the introduction of assistant military prosecutors at the public prosecutor's offices in Rome, Naples, and Verona, “are measures capable of enhancing the coordination of investigations, especially in the most sensitive legal cases, and increasing the effectiveness and timeliness of criminal proceedings as a whole.”

“I therefore extend my best wishes for success in this new judicial year,” he concludes, “in the knowledge that the military judiciary will always be a guarantee of expertise in military matters, an essential guardian of legality, and a defining feature of our democracy.”
