"The recent developments in the global geopolitical landscape clearly highlight the complexity of the historical moment we are experiencing and underscore how crucial it is to strengthen international cooperation in order to contribute concretely to global stability and balance."
With these words, the Undersecretary of State for Defence, Hon. Matteo Perego di Cremnago, opened the fifth edition of the Italy-Vietnam Defence Policy Dialogue held in Hanoi.
In his address, the Undersecretary emphasised the increasingly strategic role of the Indo-Pacific region, and in particular Southeast Asia, for future global dynamics.
"In a context marked by growing competition and rapid technological changes, maintaining peace and stability in this region is essential. The effects of potential regional tensions also reverberate across the enlarged Mediterranean, an area of primary interest for Italy. Today’s dialogue represents a natural evolution of a strategic exchange that we hope will further strengthen, making the Strategic Partnership between our two countries ever more solid, structured, and mutually beneficial", stated Perego.
During the mission, the Undersecretary also met with the Vietnamese Minister of Defence, Gen. Phan Van Giang. The meeting enabled an exchange of views on the current international scenario and reaffirmed the commitment of the Italian Ministry of Defence to dialogue and multilateral cooperation. Minister Giang expressed strong appreciation for the presence in the region of Italian Defence assets, as part of recent naval diplomacy initiatives.
The Undersecretary’s visit concluded at the Vinh Phuc base, home to the 113th Brigade of the Vietnamese Ground Forces’ Special Assault Forces, where he had the opportunity to gain deeper insight into the operational capabilities and training standards of one of Vietnam’s elite military units.
