"In the current crisis scenario we are experiencing, we need an efficient and adequate military instrument to safeguard national interests. The Coast Guard Corps is an irreplaceable pillar of our maritime system.
The more than 11,000 men and women who make up the Corps are daily engaged in missions that range from navigation and port safety to combating marine pollution; from fisheries surveillance to the protection of biological resources; from assisting maritime traffic to safeguarding human life at sea. This professionalism has been able to interpret the changes of the times and respond to increasingly complex scenarios with renewed enthusiasm and vision," stated the Undersecretary, who then continued:
“The simultaneous presidency, in recent weeks, of the three main international forums dedicated to Coast Guard functions, hosted in Rome, represents the culmination of the authoritative path undertaken under the leadership of Admiral Carlone, to whom I extend my heartfelt thanks for the dedication and expertise with which he has led this excellence of our country, wishing him a future still rich in personal satisfactions.”
To Admiral Sergio Liardo, the new General Commander, the Undersecretary extended "best wishes for success, confident that his experience will lead the Coast Guard Corps to further achievements in safeguarding the defense and security of the Nation."
