The collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and the national agency ENEA has been renewed to support scientific missions.
Marking the start of the agreement, an Italian Air Force flight landed on the Antarctic pack ice, ready to ensure the transport of researchers, equipment, and vehicles between New Zealand and Antarctica for the entire duration of the mission.
The Armed Forces are contributing experts from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Carabinieri, who will work alongside researchers throughout the mission, enabling and securing external and underwater field activities, supporting air operations, providing weather forecasts, and ensuring flight activity control.
At the Mario Zucchelli Station, until the early months of 2026, 200 researchers and technicians will work on glaciology, climate, geology, biodiversity, and oceanography as part of the PNRA – National Antarctic Research Program.
