“Cordial meeting with the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix. At the center of the discussion was the role of the UNIFIL mission in an increasingly fragile context, marked by the need to avoid a security vacuum in southern Lebanon. It is a priority to support stability, promote negotiated dialogue, and ensure the full implementation of Resolution 1701, also considering a possible extension of the mandate beyond December 31, including its strengthening through rules of engagement suited to the evolving operational context, and—at the same time—the enhancement of the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces. It is essential to guarantee a multinational presence in southern Lebanon, defined on the basis of guidance and lessons learned in the field, following a “bottom-up” approach grounded in the experience of those who operate daily in the area, rather than on solutions imposed from above. Within the broader regional scenario, including with reference to the Strait of Hormuz, it remains crucial to work toward restoring the role of the United Nations as a pillar of international security, while also promoting international coordination and the search for shared diplomatic solutions.”
So said the Minister of Defence, Guido Crosetto..
