Today, July 4, the Amerigo Vespucci will take part in the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, sailing alongside the world's largest fleet of tall ships and naval vessels in front of the Statue of Liberty. “With the Vespucci, we bring Italy to the world aboard an extraordinary ambassador, a source of pride for our Navy and our Defence. Its presence in New York, on the day the United States celebrates 250 years of independence, symbolizes a bond that spans history. It is a tribute to the 20 million Italian Americans who have contributed to the growth and greatness of the United States. It is also a sign of gratitude to the 16,757 American service members who rest in our cemeteries or remain missing in Italy after fighting for the liberation of our country. It is also a tribute to the 13,821 American military personnel and 2,575 American civilians who today live and work in Italy, welcomed as friends and allies, contributing every day to the security of the Atlantic Alliance. It is also an opportunity to remember the Italian service members who were killed or wounded during international missions alongside the United States and our NATO, European Union, and United Nations allies, from the Balkans to Afghanistan, together with the many civilians who shared those same commitments. The Vespucci is there to bear witness to the strength of a friendship founded on shared values, respect for commitments, and the determination to continue building security, freedom, and peace together.
