“Just a few days after the conclusion of the European Athletics and Swimming Championships, a new major event for international sport is getting underway: the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games.

Italy is proud to host this important event, which celebrates, through sport, the values that unite us: commitment, respect, competition and fair play.

My very best wishes to all the female and male athletes taking part in the competitions, with a special thought for those wearing the uniform, who represent the Armed Forces on the fields of competition.

The Defence is also contributing beyond the competitions, with personnel, equipment and facilities supporting the organisation and security of the event.

To all of them, and to everyone working to ensure the success of this important event, I extend my thanks.
