Statement by Minister Crosetto to the Chamber of Deputies
“Respecting the agreements on U.S. bases in Italy does not mean being involved in a war, but fulfilling, with responsibility, commitments established by law. Italy is not at war, but it is part of NATO and acts in full compliance with the Constitution and international treaties.
The use of military bases is part of a line of continuity followed by all governments, which over the years have consistently applied these agreements without ever questioning them.
In an increasingly tense and uncertain international scenario, marked by new threats and a growing arms race, Italy must maintain balance, responsibility, and a sense of proportion, avoiding any escalation.
In keeping with our Constitution, the country maintains a clear and consistent line. At such a delicate moment, unity is needed: we will continue to work with seriousness, in respect of Parliament and the Institutions.”
Thus stated the Minister of Defence, Guido Crosetto, during the Government’s urgent briefing to the Chamber of Deputies on the use of military bases on Italian territory by the United States Armed Forces.
