Strengthening the collaboration and coordination in space and national security activities among allied countries: this was the objective of the Combined Space Operations (CSpO) Initiative High Committee, which met in Florence, at the Military Aeronautical Science Institute (ISMA) on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of its establishment.
The meeting, held on 4-5 December, brought together representatives of the Defence Ministries of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, United Kingdom, United States and Italy.
Space security and defence, a critical operational domain, are vital to prevent the possibility for malign actors to inhibit, degrade or stop essential services based on spatial systems, such as essential communication services and apps, air, maritime and land transport GPS systems, territorial and environmental surveillance and weather forecasts. All this activities are based on space infrastructures, satellites and control centres.
In this regard, space infrastructure security and defence is the indispensable pre-requisite for development in the technological, economic and social well-being sectors.
Italy has joined CSpO, established to strengthen global collaboration to respond to challenges and threats in the space domain and beyond, in 2023.
