"In the current geopolitical scenario, space is a strategic domain that requires collaboration between Allies. An important agreement has been signed between the Italian Defence General Staff and the United States Space Command to develop synergies and facilitate the exchange of experiences. Excellent!"
These were the remarks of Defence Minister Guido Crosetto on the Memorandum of Agreement for the assignment of an Italian Liaison Officer to the United States Space Command (USSPACECOM).
It is an important agreement, especially with a view to improving the coordination of activities in the space domain, as well as a valuable opportunity to develop synergies with the other countries already present at USSPACECOM with their own Liaison Officer.
A long and fruitful history of collaboration links Italian and American Defence in the space sector. Memoranda of Understanding are in place for access to the encrypted GPS (Global Positioning System) service, for the exchange of satellite communication resources (SATCOM), and for the exchange of Space Situational Awareness (SSA) data and information. They are indispensable for safe manoeuvres in orbital space, and to avoid collision with other operational satellites and space debris.
