September 11, 2001: “25 years ago, our view of the world changed forever”

“There are days that never seem to end. September 11 is one of them.
Twenty-five years ago, our view of the world changed forever.
Terrorism opened a deep wound in the world’s conscience, claiming thousands of innocent lives.
Each of us remembers where we were and what we were doing as those images streamed live into the homes of millions of people, etching themselves forever into our memories and leaving an indelible scar.
The tragedy of September 11 united us in grief.
Today, our thoughts go out to the victims, their families, and all those who lost their lives trying to save others. Their sacrifice lives on in all our memories.
Twenty-five years have passed. Yet the world has not become safer. The threats have changed, multiplied, and taken on new forms.
The memory of the barbaric attack twenty-five years ago compels us to protect that shared framework of values, founded on the principles of freedom and peaceful coexistence among peoples.
Those Towers, which are no longer with us today, remain a reminder of what happened and of what can still happen when freedom and security are threatened.
Today, as then, no country can face the challenges to our security alone. We need an international community capable of remaining united, sharing responsibilities, and not backing down in the face of terrorism and new global threats.” So said Defense Minister Guido Crosetto.
