Guido Crosetto, Italy’s Minister of Defence, today spoke at the opening of the Seminar of the “Mediterranean and Middle East Special Group” of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, held at the Parliamentary Groups Hall of the Chamber of Deputies.
“I am here today not only out of the respect I have for this Assembly and for the Atlantic Alliance, but also to entrust you with the responsibility of positively influencing your Parliaments and, more broadly, your nations, by explaining to them that there can be no future except through the unity of all free countries and the rebuilding of a charter of shared values,” said Minister Crosetto, who then added:
“Each of us has the duty to contribute to a new NATO, an essential cornerstone of our defence and deterrence capabilities, now called not only to respond to crises, but also to anticipate them, starting with the threats and instabilities coming from the Southern Flank.
Africa represents a strategic priority: a young continent, rich in resources, energy, and potential, yet still marked by deep economic, social, and institutional fragilities. Looking at the Southern Flank means understanding that security, development, and stability are inseparable dimensions.
The Atlantic Alliance must evolve, open up, and increasingly engage in dialogue with countries that share our values, interests, and common visions. On the issue of defence, Europe must move beyond the boundaries of the 27 Member States and also involve the other nations of the continent, in order to share responsibilities and security and to address increasingly complex threats.
I am certain that your work will be fundamental in ensuring a better future for our children.”
