Throughout the night, and also now, I have been in close contact with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Luciano Portolano, and the Commander of the COVI, General Giovanni Iannucci, in order to constantly monitor developments in the situation in Niamey, Niger, where gunfire and explosions have been reported in the area of Base 101 and at other locations in the capital. Our personnel and infrastructure have not been involved in the incidents. All Italian personnel are safe and, at present, there are no indications suggesting that our personnel are exposed to any imminent danger. The situation is being monitored with the utmost attention, and we continue to maintain close coordination with our representatives on the ground and with the military leadership.” Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto said.
