Recently Exercise Ramstein Legacy 24 (RALY 24) has ended. The Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD) NATO Exercise takes place every other year to test and improve the interoperability of Atlantic Alliance Member Countries.
The 2024 edition, hosted by Romania and Bulgaria, has seen the participation of NATO air and land assets provided, besides the hosting countries, by Czech Republic, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and the United Kingdom, at the Capu Midia (Romania), Koren and Varna (Bulgaria) training areas.
The Multinational Battle Group provided its contribution to RALY24 by deploying a very short air defence capability (V-SHORAD) made available by 121st Air defence Artillery Regiment Ravenna. The Italian formation was made up of a Command Post and Firing Squads equipped with a Stinger shouldered missile defence system (MANPADS) fro engaging enemy aircraft. The Italian Command Post was permanently connected with a Ground Operational Centre (GOC), tasked with managing the tactical control of units making up the air defence deployment.
The Bulgarian Armed Forces were also present at the training area, deploying Army air defence batteries equipped with a SA-8 GEGKO system and Air Force batteries equipped with SA-6 GAINFUL Missile Weapons Systems.
Operations conducted by the Italian Armed Forces on NATO’s Eastern Flank are ordered by the Chief of Defence Staff and coordinated by the Directorate of the Joint Operations Command (COVI).
