Minister Crosetto’s Hearing on Cyber Defence

“The management of cyber security, at the national level and more, needs the different State sectors to work in synergy to develop solutions aimed to take advantage of every cyber competence and every capability available to the country in that sector. Moreover, we need more and more flexibility as compared to the past, but we need above all to work with an inclusive, innovative approach. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is for sure an asset and a great innovation: unfortunately, it also facilitates the dissemination of contents that are or can be manipulated, , and possibly dangerous for both the national security and the privacy that is due to every single citizen. Basically, the risk is to make increasingly difficult to distinguish authentic information from makeshift or blatantly false information. Furthermore, the speed and pervasiveness characterizing the dissemination of such false news are a direct threat to social stability, democracy and national security. At the same time, AI is an innovation and a fundamental technology, crucial and necessary to mitigate the damages which, paradoxically but only to a certain extent, it can generate. The time to change and innovate to tackle future challenges, but also, most importantly current ones, is now. Italy must equip itself, it must understand the potential of AI and must avoid threats that may undermine the stability of the country, the lives of its citizens, and its democracy”. Thus Minister Crosetto during his Hearing on Cyber Defence, New Profiles and Critical Areas, before the IV Defence Committee of the Chamber of Deputies.
