“What would have happened if we had not been there?
If there had not been the presence of contingents from all over the world. If Italy had not chosen, once again, to be there. And to do so with its own military personnel: a recognized excellence.

I am not speaking only of operational capabilities. I am speaking of something deeper: an approach that stems from our culture, founded on respect, listening, and dialogue. This is what makes Italian service members respected and sought after by the international community.

You, like those who came before you, have shown that wearing a uniform is not incompatible with extending a helping hand. That strength can coexist with understanding. That being warriors does not mean renouncing one’s humanity.

Your service, together with that of all your colleagues, builds Italy’s reputation in the world. It is this reputation that makes Italy stronger. I ask you to feel this responsibility, to feel yourselves part of this greatness… because it belongs to you.

I often draw strength for my work by thinking of what you—women and men of the Defense—are doing, far from home, in difficult contexts, in silence. You are a source of inspiration for me, and before your commitment and sacrifice, I bow my head.

Today, I have the honor of bringing you the gratitude of Italy.”

Thus spoke the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, when meeting Italian military personnel during his official visit to Lebanon.

A valuable meeting with the President of the Republic of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, a great friend of Italy and a personal friend of mine.

"A cordial exchange on regional security, in light of the complex international scenario. The role of the LAF, the Lebanese Armed Forces, remains fundamental in ensuring stability not only in Lebanon, but throughout the entire region.

Even after UNIFIL, Italy will continue to do its part, firmly supporting the international presence and contributing to the capacity-building of the LAF themselves.

We continue to work so that negotiations may lead to concrete results, ensuring that no one can benefit from a situation of instability in southern Lebanon.

Our presence and our commitment are the result of a choice of responsibility and of the deep bond that unites our countries,” the Minister stated on the sidelines of the meeting with the Lebanese President.

During the visit, Minister Crosetto also held a cordial meeting with his Lebanese counterpart, General Michel Menassa. The talks focused on the stability of Lebanon, a key country for the security of the region and the wider Mediterranean.

It is necessary to support the strengthening of the LAF, so that the Lebanese Armed Forces are placed in the best possible conditions to defend the country", ensuring security and respect for borders,” the Minister stated, adding:

It is essential to ensure financial support, training, and equipment, as well as to intensify the efforts of the international community—which Italy will continue to support with determination—for the full implementation of United Nations resolutions.

We will guarantee our presence at both the multilateral and bilateral levels, including through participation in the Military Technical Committee for Lebanon (MCT4L) and the MIBIL mission, in the belief that multinational support remains the most effective solution in crisis areas.”

Appreciation was expressed for the presence and work of the Italian military personnel.

Earlier today, the Minister paid tribute to the fallen by laying a wreath.

Upon his arrival in Lebanon this morning, he stated:
It is an honor to convey my personal thanks and those of the Government, as well as the symbolic embrace of all Italians, to our military personnel who will spend these festive days away from their loved ones, in the service of the country".
