“I am closely monitoring with deep concern what is happening in southern Lebanon, particularly regarding the involvement of UNIFIL forces, which today resulted in the death of three peacekeepers and the injury of others.
On this matter, I had a telephone conversation this afternoon with my French counterpart, Catherine Vautrin, with whom we shared the strategic importance of UNIFIL.
Targeting United Nations contingents is neither tolerable nor acceptable under any circumstances. UN forces are there to ensure peace, help prevent escalation, and, where possible, provide space for dialogue and protection for the civilian population.
Those who attack the Blue Helmets do not strike individual contingents: they strike the international community as a whole and the principles that guarantee coexistence among States.”
So stated the Minister of Defence, Guido Crosetto.
