“Security does not by itself produce prosperity and wealth, but it creates the conditions for them to be generated.

For years, the economy and security were considered separate dimensions. Today, that is no longer the case.

Every economy depends on flows: goods, raw materials, energy, information and data. Physical and digital flows that rely on infrastructure, networks, routes and points of passage. This is where vulnerabilities are concentrated.

When one of these nodes comes under strain, the consequences reach our businesses and our homes. Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb are clear examples.

Defence must be able to anticipate scenarios and protect the conditions for our growth. Because tomorrow’s competition will also be technological, industrial and economic, and our ability to address it will determine prosperity, democracy and freedom.”

This is what Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto said at the Abruzzo Economy Summit 2026 in Pescara.
