On January 12, 2010, Haiti was struck by a devastating earthquake. Roads torn apart, hospitals collapsed, families separated, children left without shelter. It was a night of fear, in which even time seemed to stand still.
Italy chose to be there. And it did so with what the Armed Forces do best when life calls: arrive, organize, treat, protect.
The Ministry of Defence took part in the international effort with a joint military contingent as part of the humanitarian mission “White Crane". The aircraft carrier Cavour was readied in record time and set sail for Haiti, transforming into a tangible relief platform capable of delivering food supplies and essential materials in a very short time, especially to isolated areas cut off from the main lines of communication.
Helicopters distributed humanitarian aid to the population and provided logistical support to the civilian and military personnel deployed on the ground. Medical assistance, engineering units engaged in debris removal, medical evacuations. A steady point in the chaos, a place where hope could breathe again.
Years later, Haiti is not just a page in international news.
It is a date that reminds us that behind every uniform there is humanity made of concrete actions: working hands, sleepless nights, time that no longer matters when someone is in need.
Because when everything collapses, what truly matters is being there.
