The Minister of Defence, Guido Crosetto, and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, met with their German counterparts Johann Wadephul and Boris Pistorius on the occasion of the “2+2” Foreign Affairs–Defence meeting.
A wide-ranging discussion focused on the security of the continent, including the Arctic region, and on strengthening the European pillar of NATO, confirming the solidity of the relationship between Italy and Germany also in the field of defence.
Firm support for Ukraine was reaffirmed: today’s first meeting between the United States, Russia and Ukraine is an encouraging sign, but it is necessary to ensure that Europe’s voice continues to be heard.
On the Middle East, it was agreed to strengthen the shared commitment to reconstruction and humanitarian assistance in Gaza and to the security of the entire Middle Eastern region, from Syria to Lebanon and Iran.
Italy and Germany also remain united in the belief that it is urgent to complete the European integration of the Balkans into the European family, in order to ensure the stability of the entire continent. This commitment is reflected in participation in the NATO KFOR and EUFOR ALTHEA missions, the latter of which Italy has just assumed command.
