Iraq: Italian workshop on emergency management and cultural heritage protection after natural disasters

Carabinieri from the NATO Mission in Iraq (NM-I) recently organized a workshop on emergency management and cultural heritage protection for the Iraqi Federal Police.

Specialists from the Carabinieri Corps deployed with NM-I and European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUMAM-I) took part in the activity. They illustrated Italy’s national crisis management structure and organization, shared practical examples, experience and lessons accrued and learnt within national and international contexts.

In particular, the Italian military illustrated the role of Police Forces in the safeguard and protection of cultural heritage, dwelling on tasks performed by the Blue Helmets of Culture Task Force in retrieving works of art and cultural heritage after natural disasters.

Italy contributes significantly to stabilization and provides support to Iraqi Institutions, within the NATO Mission in Baghdad, where it deployed soldiers from the Armed Forces as well as the Chief of Staff and expert specialists. The latter are responsible for advisory activities in a number of functional areas for the local Defence Ministry and Ministry of the Interior, as well as the National Security Advisor’s Office.

This strategically relevant activities are conducted side by side with the training of specialists from Iraqi operational units conducted by Italian personnel.
