Defence Minister Guido Crosetto held an important videoconference meeting with Japanese Defence Minister Shinjirō Koizumi and UK Secretary of State for Defence John Healey. The focus was on the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a 6th generation international aerospace programme that is “fundamental for generating innovative capabilities, including those not traditionally linked to defence, and delivering dual-use projects, as well as competitive and technological advantages, which are essential for countering present and future threats and challenges”.
"The videoconference meeting," said Minister Crosetto, "was an opportunity to reaffirm the strong and shared commitment to the project, also based on the activities of the two recently activated operational branches of the programme: the International Government Organisation (GIGO) and the “Edgewing” joint venture, which brings together international leaders in the aerospace sector BAE Systems (United Kingdom), Leonardo and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd. (Japan).
The need to ensure maximum effort was reiterated in view of the imminent signing of the first international contract, which will launch concrete activities to equip the programme with its first aircraft by 2035."
