“We are working together for the GCAP to encompass the best technology and capacities available in Italy, Japan and the UK.” This is the declaration issued by Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto at the end of the trilateral meeting with UK Secretary of State for Defence Grant Shapps and Special Advisor to Japan’s Minister of Defence Yoshiaki Wada, held in Rome yesterday at Palazzo Areonautica.
A long, significant discussion which laid the foundations to define the treaty that will start the parliamentary approval process to be signed in Tokyo by year end.
GCAP (Global Combat Air Programme) provides for the development and production of a new 6th generation aircraft: a programme with significant dividend for the security and technological development of the three countries, as well as for the defence and aerospace technology, innovation and research and development sectors.
The meeting follows the trilateral talks held on 13 September by the representatives of Italy, the United Kingdom and Japan. The three countries signed a memorandum on Cooperation (MoC) on 16 December, 2022, based on solid, long-lasting relations among the three countries and shared values of freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law.
