“If we do not defend our rules, someone else will rewrite them, and they will do it to their own benefit. We are living in an age of transition: from great democracies to great powers. Once, progress was measured in terms of rights and prosperity, now what’s most important is one’s ability to express power. In Italy we have lost the culture of Defence. We want security, but we are not ready to invest in order to build it. We don’t perceive the urgency of guaranteeing an appropriate defence of our States because we don’t understand that the State is, after all, made up of all our families. The most deceitful threat? Cognitive war. Today we don’t need tanks to destabilize a country: fake news, state bonds and digital propaganda is all we need to undermine trust in the Institutions. To defend oneself also means to defend our “collective” mind”.

Thus Defence Minister Guido Crosetto on the occasion of the presentation of the “Italians and the Defence” survey during the Difesa-L’industria necessaria (Defence-The Necessary Industry) conference, hosted by Fondazione Luigi Einaudi.
