Today, in the afternoon, implementing the self-defence principle, Navy Ship Duilio shot down a drone in the Red Sea. The latter, whose features were similar to those of drones already used in previous attacks, was at a distance of about 6 km from the Italian ship, and was flying toward her.
Currently, Navy Ship Duilio is deployed in that area to ensure freedom of navigation and the security of commercial routes. The ship replaced Navy Ship Martinengo within the framework of the national activity which started at the end of December, following attacks by Houthi’s militias against ships transiting in the Strait of Ba Al Mandeb.
The Minister underscored: “The Houthi’s terrorist attacks are a serious violation of international law and an attack to the security of maritime traffic, from which our economy depends. Such attacks are part of a hybrid war that exploits every opportunity, not only at the military level, to damage some countries and benefit others”.
Navy Ship Duilio is operating in the Red Sea to safeguard international law and national interests.
