A man calls 112. His voice is confused, despair weighing on every word. He says he wants to commit an extreme act.
On the other end of the line is a Carabinieri officer from the Operations Center.
The officer immediately understands that every second is precious, but he does not know exactly where the caller is. The man provides no precise details, only the name of a town in the province of Palermo.
He stays on the phone with him. He listens.
He gains his trust. He keeps him engaged in the conversation.
Minute after minute. More than fifty pass.
Meanwhile, other Carabinieri officers begin searching, driving through the streets of the town.
And while he speaks, while he tries to keep hope alive, the officer does not lose his composure.
Every detail is crucial.
He listens to every breath. Every pause. Every sound.
Then a distant noise comes through the phone, almost imperceptible, but familiar to him: the sirens of patrol cars.
That small clue becomes the key to understanding where the man is.
The Carabinieri arrive in time. They rescue him and entrust him to the care of medical personnel.
Sometimes saving a life does not mean performing spectacular acts.
Sometimes the difference is made by attention, composure, and care for every detail.
