This morning, the ceremony at the Altar of the Fatherland opened the celebrations for Republic Day.
The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, accompanied by the Minister of Defence, Guido Crosetto, and the highest institutional officials, paid tribute to the Unknown Soldier by laying a laurel wreath. Subsequently, the Head of State, still accompanied by Minister Crosetto, reviewed the troops aboard the historic Lancia Flaminia along Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, before the parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali.
The theme of the celebrations is: "80 years of the Republic, eighty years at the service of the Country".
Opening the parade was a delegation of Mayors wearing the Tricolour sash. Following them, Maestro Andrea Bocelli sang the Italian National Anthem, accompanied by the Joint Forces Military Band. The parade, divided into 12 sectors, saw the participation of all branches of the State: military and civilian personnel, armed and non-armed State Corps, Flags and Standards, as well as military Bands and Fanfares.
Among them were the Military Chaplains, in honor of the centenary of the Military Ordinariate, and the Olympic and Paralympic Sports Groups of the Armed Forces and State Armed Corps.
Subsequently, Joint Forces helicopters performed a flyover, and the Tricolour flag was carried along Via dei Fori Imperiali. Finally, the National Aerobatic Team (Frecce Tricolori) drew the Tricolour across the sky of Rome.
In closing, final honors were paid to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, who left the ceremony venue preceded by the Fanfare of the 4th Mounted Carabinieri Regiment and escorted by the Corazzieri Regiment.
On the occasion of Republic Day, the buildings of the Ministry of Defence were decorated with the Tricolour flag.
