President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, accompanied by Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, today took part in the celebration organized on the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the destruction of the City of Cassino.
To recall the sacrifice of an entire population, President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, in the presence of Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, laid a wreath at the Monument to the Fallen in Piazza Alcide De Gasperi.
A homage to the victims of March 15, 1944, the day when, a month after the total destruction of Monte Cassino Abbey (February 15,1944) the Allied forces, within the military campaign aimed to defeat Nazism, heavily bombarded Cassino, unfortunately resulting in the total destruction of the entire city.
One of the hardest-fought and bloody battles in recent history, the Battle of Cassino was recalled in a ceremony attended, among others, by the Army Chief, General Carmine Masiello, and civilian, military and religious authorities.
