On the occasion of the National Unification and Armed Forces’ Day, President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella, accompanied by Defence Minister Guido Crosetto laid a wrath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, at Rome Altar of Fatherland.

Then, Venice hosted the military ceremony, in the presence of President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Luciano Portolano and civilian, religious and military authorities.

We celebrate the 4th of November because our memories of the past would not exist if they were not embodied in the present. And we celebrate the present through the silent sacrifice of thousands of men and women in uniform. This day is meant to be, on the one hand, a tribute to the memory of those who have preceded us, our Fallen in particular, to whom we address our deep-felt thoughts. On the other hand, it is also a valuable opportunity to thank all of you for guaranteeing our security day by day, with dedication, love and passion. Defending freedom and democracy entails sacrifice, and the Armed Forces are the first bulwark of peace. The gratitude of the nation goes to all of you”.

Thus Minister Crosetto.

During the ceremony the President of the Republic  bestowed the Knights Cross of the Military Order of Italy to the War Flags of the Navy and Naval Forces; 152nd Infantry Regiment Sassari; 8th Artillery Regiment Pasubio; War Flag of Marceglia Navy Ship, and the War Flags of 14th Wing and 8th Regiment Carabinieri Corps Lazio.

The ceremony closed with the fly-over of the National Aerobatic Team, Frecce Tricolori, and the launch of Armed Forces Paratroopers.

In the afternoon, the lowering of the flag, which was then presented to Minister Crosetto, marked the closing ceremony of Villaggio Difesa, the exhibition area located at the Circus Maximus from the 1st trough the 4th of November to illustrate to the public the work of the Armed Forces.

To conclude the day, Minister Crosetto held a video conference with Armed Forces personnel participating in national and out of area missions from the Joint Operations Command (COVI). Crosetto greeted and thanked the military engaged in 39 missions (3 national and 36 international ones) to guarantee the security and defence of our national interests.
