The sea was his path, Italy his ideal.
Nazario Sauro was a great Italian and an extraordinary sailor. The Defence honours the memory of a serviceman who, through his life and the dignity with which he faced imprisonment and a death sentence, gave decisive strength to the development of national values.
His choice to serve Italy and his countless heroic feats make him, even today, one of the most important symbols of the unity of our people — an example of virtue and courage.
