The Director

MAJOR GENERAL LUIGI CASALI

Major General Luigi Casali, was born in Great Britain on march 24th 1969. He joined the italian air force in 1988 attending the Academy in Pozzuoli from 1988 through 1992 within the course “Ibis IV”.
He received his Wings in 1993 after graduating from the EURO-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training in Sheppard AFB, Texas, where he flew the T37 and T-38A. 
After attending the Lead In to Fighter Training Course in 1993, on the Fiat G-91-T at the 60th Air Brigade in Amedola (FG), he undertook the Operational Conversion Course on the PA200 Tornado at the Trinational Tornado Training Establishment (TTTE) – RAF Cottesmore (UK). In 1994 he was assigned to the 6th Wing, 102nd Squadron in Ghedi where he began his Operational Flying career on the PA200. 
Within the operations performed in the 102nd Squadron, 6th Wing, he participated to the air operations in ex Yugoslavia and Kosovo acquiring in the meantime two ship leader,  formation leader and chase qualifications on the Tornado aircraft. 
 In 1998 he was selected as instructor pilot and after successfully completing the Pilot Instructor Training in the TTTE RAF Cottesmore, he was employed as an instructor pilot in the Operational Conversion Unit PA200 of the 6th Wing until 2004. 
From 2004 to 2007 he was assigned to the ENJJPT - Sheppard AFB as an instructor pilot on T38A and C. 
In 2007 he was assigned to 61st Wing, where he was appointed 214th professional instruction Squadron Commander and, subsequently, 212th Lift Squadron Commander. 
Completed the flight experience, in September 2007 he was transferred to the Air Staff Head-Quarters 3rd Division and in 2010 he attended the 116th Senior Course at the NATO Defence College in Rome. 
With the rank of colonel, in September 2010 he was assigned to Air Staff Head-Quarters 4th Division, occupying the positions of T346A project office Chairman, Deputy Chief and Chief of 2nd Office in charge of operational requirements for manned systems until june 2016.
 From October 2011 to May 2012 he was appointed Airbase Support Air Advisory Team Commander in Shindad AFB - Afghanistan. 
In 2016 he was appointed as Base Commander at the 61th Wing Commander until 2018. 
In august 2018 he was appointed to the Air Education and Training Command as Head of the 3rd Office, responsible for training and standardization of aetc Wings and Formation Institutes. 
Furthermore he was also appointed as Head of the International Flight Training School (IFTS) Program Office. 
In July 2019 he was promoted Brigadier General and appointed as Chief of Staff of the Air Education and Training Commander. 
In 2020 he attended the 71st study session of the IASD course at the Center for Advanced Studies for Defense. 
Brigadier General Luigi Casali is a senior command pilot with more than 3500 flying hours. 
In September the 06th 2022 Brigadier General Luigi CASALI was appointed Commander of the Air Force Academy in Pozzuoli.
In November 2023 he was promoted Major General.
On November 3, 2025, he took up role of Director of Department I – Industry Policy and International Relations – of the National Armaments Directorate.
He has achieved the “Bachelor’s Degree” in Aeronautical Sciences at the Federico II University of Naples. 
He is married with Anna Gloria and has two sons: Giacomo e Andrea.
