The attention paid by the Italian historiography of the Great War to the war events and the technological and industrial characteristics assumed by the conflict still has little evidence in more specific sectors, characterized by high technical components. Among these, for example, there are some Intelligence activities and in particular those on operational communications, operated by our Army.
Even then, the information branch assumed ever greater importance and therefore underwent a profound evolution, developed through complex phases and sometimes made difficult due to the conflicting views on the functions of the Information Service itself. This theme finds adequate answers in this volume, which offers a detailed account of it and exposes, among other things, on the basis of extensive archival documentation, numerous aspects that have not been well known up to now. In this context, it should be noted that, during the conflict, other information agencies operated in Italy, in addition to that of the Army, including the Information Service of the Italian Royal Navy, which distinguished itself, among other things, in a major operation such as was the famous "Zurich Raid", with the consequent elimination of a dangerous Austro-Hungarian espionage and sabotage network active in Italy until the early months of 1917.
Another important aspect is the evolution imposed by the war needs on the Intelligence branches of armies opposed, it concerns the use of technological innovations, many of which led to important applications in the post-war period also in the civil sector.
