Trident Juncture 2018 is a multinational NATO exercise aimed at streamlining the ability of the 29 Member States and their partner countries to operate together, as well as certify and train the  NATO Response Force, i.e. the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force used by NATO to promptly respond to challenges.

Italy has taken part in the exercise with a contingent of its military stationed at STRIKFORNATO (Lisbon – Portugal).
A  small contingent made up of personnel from all the Armed Forces has assumed a leading role within the framework of the  staff of CTF 1106 onboard USS Mount Whitney starting from 12 October in Lisbon.

During the initial phase of the exercise participating assets have reached the area of operation, and the staff has led operational activities with increasing levels of difficulty, aimed at amalgamating assigned forces and prepare them for the final phase of the exercise, so-called LIVEX, a simulation of a  land, sea and air conflict.

Trident Juncture 2018 was an important test for the military of the North Atlantic Alliance which, after 25 years, has resumed conducting exercises in non-permissive, multi-threat scenarios often characterized by especially severe weather conditions.

The exercise involved:
•31 participating countries (29 NATO  MS+ Sweden and Finland);
•52,000 servicemen and servicewomen;
•65 naval units;
•250 aircraft;
•over 10,000 land vehicles.

Trident Juncture 2018 LIVEX allowed testing all the forces in scenarios characterized by hybrid war modalities and constant cyber threats. Moreover, Carrier Strike Group 8 of the US Navy (based on USS H.S. Truman Battle Group) and Marine Expeditionary Force have worked under the operational control of a NATO Command. STRIKFORNATO has then performed an amphibious  disembarkation operations on the Norwegian shore with a Force which included 17,000 servicemen and servicewomen and 20 vessels. The Strike group ha salso operated in the Arctic mainland, conducting flight operations in extreme weather conditions for the first time after 28 years.
