Minister Guerini’s Rome meeting with Ahmed Maitig, Vice-President of Libya Government of National Accord, has taken place today, late in the afternoon, at Palazzo Baracchini, headquarters to the Ministry of Defence.
In the first place, Guerini expressed his satisfaction with the excellent relations between the two countries:”The pace and tone of our institutional meetings - he said- give a very accurate picture of our excellent relations, including President Serraj’s last week visit to Rome, where he met with President of the Council of Ministers Conte and Foreign Affairs Minister Di Maio”.
The friendly meeting focused on the Libyan crisis: in this regard, Guerini expressed his hope for a political solution, in compliance with the will of the Libyan people. Moreover, the Minister confirmed his satisfaction with results achieved over last year’s fall following the October ceasefire agreement. He then added:”It is now indispensable, in the interest of the Libyan people, to pursue the ongoing institutional dialogue, in order to swiftly identify shared and sustainable political solutions, able to ensure an orderly effective transition toward the December 2021 elections. Italy will continue to ensure its full support to the Intra-Libyan dialogue, and will continue to raise international actors’ awareness on the importance of working in a cohesive way to achieve a lasting solution for the Libyan crisis “. Minister Guerini also expressed his appreciation for Vice-President Maitig availability to discuss with Eastern Libya:”We hope an agreement for a sustainable solution, able to effectively move the country toward a new, extremely important phase, can be achieved “.
Talks also focused on Italy-Libya military cooperation and the results -including the Italy -Libya Technical Cooperation Agreement-of the recent meeting between Guerini and his Libyan counterpart, Minister Namroush. The Agreement allowed concluding a large Cooperation Plan (comprised of 60 activities), and validating an ambitious training program in favor of Libyan military personnel to be conducted in Italy:”The Italian Defence wants to pursue this commitment also in the coming years. In this regard, the presence of our military personnel in Libya will be fundamental: we will support envisaged activities effectively and all Libya’s requests in every sector: humanitarian demining, military medicine, training,hydrographic research and Search and Rescue “.
Finally, having wished Vice-President Maitig every success for his Rome visit and institutional meetings, Minister Guerini conclude:”I am glad for this opportunity to meet you, especially in light of Libya’s historical closeness to Italy resulting in the country’s central role in maintaining deep friendly relations with Italy.
